Shawn Colvin is an internationally renowned songwriter and contemporary folk-rock musician. She has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards and won three.

Colvin was born in 1956 in South Dakota and grew up in Illinois and Canada. She began playing guitar at age 10 and started performing professionally while a student at Southern Illinois University. In 1987, she was hired to sing backup on the international hit “Luka” by Suzanne Vega. After touring with Vega, Colvin released her debut album Steady On, which won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Her followup, Fat City (1992), was also nominated for a Grammy.

Colvin is best known for the song “Sunny Came Home,” from her fourth album A Few Small Repairs (1996). The single reached number 7 in the Billboard charts and won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

She has released over a dozen albums, and sung with Steve Earle, James Taylor, Béla Fleck, Sting, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, among other musicians. She published a memoir, Diamond in the Rough, in 2012.
